All of those are promised to receive some development love once again. The Nik Collection currently consists of seven plugins for the desktop versions of Lightroom and Photoshop. It doesn’t seem out of place, then, that it would want to acquire photo editing tools to complete the circle. One of those is the DxO ONE camera add-on for smartphones, which recently just got an update. While perhaps best known for its benchmarks and review over at DxOMark, which covers not just phones but also cameras, DxO does have other products and interests.

After all, the Nik Collection didn’t come for free until last year when Google removed the price tag.įortunately, DxO is now picking up the pieces.

It simply carried the burden of maintaining the Collection of plugins for Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom in order to keep its users happy, at least for a time. I decided it did.Truth be told, Google may have really only been interested in the photo editing app Snapseed anyway when it acquired Nik Software. If you are now using NIK 2, you'll need to decide if the new functions merit the price. I recommend you try it if you haven't used it before.

But, I will say that this is an excellent addition to LR and PS. So, it's mostly the same, and some of the new features may be huge or minor to you, depending on how you use it. If you are now using the free version, by buying NIK 3, you are entitled to support. You can now open a file in a NIK module with a preset applied. I say semi because you still have to create a TIF file, and you can't carry edits over to any other NIK modules without losing the original edits. They now have a way to "semi-non-destructively" edit a file with one of the modules, then reopen it later and modify your edits. So, NIK edits can be come layers in Photoshop. Many users had found that NIK had become incompatible with Photoshop CC. You can do that in Lightroom Classic, but it's easier with NIK. There is one new module, Perspective Efex, which does a great job of straightening buildings and removing distortion.

I just received an email to upgrade to nik collection 3. I have nik collection 2, mostly for Silver Efex Pro. Since DxO never gave anyone any kind of a discount for BUYING NIK previously I deleted the trial yesterday. So you still have open the NIK apps so it is more like a shortcut than anything else. The PS selective tool allow you to apply a favorite recipe or preset but doesn’t allow you to modify it from PS. So did their presenter as yesterday he had to start all over after it didn’t save the fixes (because he did the wrong thing, so pilot error). The new features like the PS tool do nothing for me as I don’t use PS and after watching their videos on its usage as well as the non-destructive feature using tiff-multiple pages I found it to be very confusing. I have not seen anything of value in the upgrades they have done except for the new Perspective tool, which would be great if I was an architectural photographer without a tilt-lenses. I've been testing it as I bought NIK back when it was NIK, then watched Google buy it, kill it after offering everyone a free copy (love paying for stuff that is later given away), watched Dxo buy it.
